What this calculator actually does

Most free "lateral pile calculators" online plug numbers into a single closed-form formula. This one runs the real thing: the p-y finite-difference method of FHWA COM624P — the method inside LPILE and RSPile — solving

EI·y⁗ + Pₓ·y″ + Eₚᵧ·y = 0

with the secant soil modulus iterated to convergence at every node. The soil is represented by published nonlinear p-y curves — Matlock (1970) soft clay, Welch & Reese (1972) stiff clay, or API sand — so the deflection, moment and shear you get respond nonlinearly to load, exactly as a design run would. Every result is mesh-checked — the 100- and 200-increment solutions must converge and agree within 3% — and the engine is validated against LPILE and RSPile with the numbers published here.

Reading the results

Check three things. First, the head deflection against your serviceability limit. Second, the maximum moment and its depth against the pile section's structural capacity — in most designs the structure, not the soil, governs. Third, the deflected shape: a well-proportioned pile crosses zero deflection and dies out well above the tip.
